I've been keeping an eye on this for a while. There may be some issues server side moving from .69 to .74 and I may have to do some sort of server vault migration - don't worry, I have (several) backups in case I screw up. ;)

The fact that people (including some of the original developers) are still interested in working on this game, and to give it some new life after 15 years, shows how well regarded it is. I plan on getting hold of a copy as soon as I can and to do some testing. I may take the opportunity to move the server to new hardware. The existing server just keeps ticking along but is getting a bit long in the tooth. I have a backup server running on much newer hardware just in case, but for now I'm working on the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" principle.

Quick post to say that I have a new NWN:EE based server up and running which should appear in the list of servers as "Kaltrip's POA EE". It's there for testing and I've not copied the servervault over, but if people have the new NWN:EE client then they're welcome to go there and see if they can crash it :)

Awesome! Not sure when I'll be getting the EE, but I hope to do it soon. At that point, I'll definitely hop on and check things out.

Thanks, Kaltrip!

Just to keep people here up to date with this, here's a summary of what I've been up to. The original server (running the standard 1.69 server software is continuing to run as normal on its current hardware. I've always also had another physical server as backup in case "Bad Things" happen and I needed to get things up and running quickly again. The current backup server is actually a lot more powerful than the live server; 16 times as much memory, much more powerful processors and faster memory and storage. When NWN:EE was announced I thought I may as well have a play and have put the existing module live on the backup server together with all the management scripts. The module is showing up on the list of live NWN:EE servers and it seems stable. No crashes so far but that is with only me testing it plus a few lost souls finding it through the server list.

What I *haven't* done is move over a copy of the server vault. Anyone playing on that server will not (currently) have access to characters from the main server. In effect this is currently a "fresh start" server. See how I spun that? What this actually means is that I'm still figuring out how to move over the vault. This shouldn't be a problem but I want to see if is causes problems for other people before I jump in and do it myself. What I was wondering is if people would actually appreciate a new start for the NWN:EE server? My understanding is that many of the exploits that are present in the original server software have been fixed in the new version which would make things fairer.

Also, it might be worth pointing out that to access the new server you will have to use the new Beamdog client since the new clients and servers are not backward compatible with each other.

/TLDR There is a new NWN:EE server up and running but characters have not been / might not be migrated.

Well i dont know about the server auls but before the real release of the game(nwn:ee) its probably just as good to not copy the whole server vault. Just a question. Is it possible for both servers to sync the same vault so if i play on the Ee server i can jump over to 1.69 an play on the same char on that server? Or are the save files that much diffrent?

The servervaults have a different structure, so simply sharing the same store between the two servers would not help directly. It might be possible to sync individual character files. Certainly there is a relatively easy procedure for migrating characters from the original server to the EE server. Whether there is also a way of moving character files back the other way, *and* that this continue to be the case in the future, is still an open question. For now I'll leave things as they are.

Still no crashes and the only problem is sometimes seeing a flicker when I open things like inventory or character windows. I'm using the new Mac client so this might not be the case in the Windows version. On the plus side, all the exploits that I'm aware of seem to have been fixed in the new version and it seems that things like inventory searches have been changed to use a sensible algorithm at last. I'd forgotten how hard it is to level characters playing solo on PoA.

There is something called a "head start" program available to anyone who orders the client through the Beamdog site. You can then use the Beamdog download client (think their version of the Steam client) to download the client. The server can also be downloaded by anyone via a link in their forums.

No more permabuffed weapons...
