How long has it been down for? everytime i get home i dont get to log on:)

Yea I tried around the same time. Server stability has definitely been rough these last few days.

I agree that this is a problem. Over the last few months I've been seeing the server hanging with the only clue being several consecutive entries in the log file about switching relayed mode. The unfortunate thing is that instead of crashing the server completely, which would force a restart, the server looks alive but stops accepting connections.
Looking at various bug reports this seems to have been a problem for others as well but dates back to right after EE was released. It has only become an issue on this server since the end of last year when some changes were made to how the hardware server is connected up network wise. In particular I need to look at some possible firewall settings to do with port redirection. The problem is that I'm a bit snowed under with things at the moment with a deadline in the next two weeks. After that I'll be free to try and get to the bottom of this without breaking anything else.
Meanwhile, and with a huge thanks to Alor for his help in this, I'm testing some monitoring code that watches for messages from the server saying that it is still alive and if it fails to see them assumes the server is hung and restarts it. This is not ideal but at least should mean that server downtime is limited to under 5 minutes, rather than relying on me to notice something is wrong. So far this is looking to be working well and unless I spot a problem I intend to go live with it this weekend.
